In the aftermath of Perseus’ defeat the settlement of the Macedonian affairs by the Romans included some severe regulations for the fragmented kingdom. One of them was forbidding the importation of salt in the four districts (merides), as attested by Titus Livius. Moreover, intermarriages were not allowed and the operation of the gold and silver mines was not permitted (this lasted for about a decade).
