Modern Nazi-Greek ideals and the classical tradition

Most of you probably heard a few weeks ago about a violent incident that took place in Greek tv. Apparently, the member of the parliament Elias Kasidiaris, who belongs to the nazi party, attacked the female member of the parliament Liana Kanneli, member of the communist party. At this point, I would like to ignore the fact that there is such a thing as a nazi Greek party, which seems to be deeply disatisfied with current German economic policies! Instead, I would like to focus on a recent interv... »

Roman jewellery in Japan

No it is not about an exhibition! This is one of the most interesting instances of cross history, actual cultural contacts between Japan and the Roman empire! Glass jewellery have been discovered at the Utsukushi burial mound in Nagaoka, Kyoto prefecture. The jewellery date from the first to the fourth centuries AD, that is the peak of the Roman empire. Extensive analysis took place of the components of 5 mm glass beads and the fragments of gilt attached to them. According to the results, the be... »

Wikiloot

Finally, activists aim at creating an Open Source platform that will include photos and information of all the antiquities that have been stolen. Wikiloot will be the name of the new crowdsourcing platform, a new experiment on data mining. Its creator seems to be Jason Felch, the co-writer of Chasing Aphrodite, the story of the stolen statue of Aphrodite and its return to its native island of Sicily.Felch and his team are trying to raise the necessary funding for the creation of the platform. Nude on the Acropolis: Nelly’s

Nelly is probably one of the best known Greek photographers of the twentieth century. She is not only respected among her peers but she holds an almost iconic place in the hearts of modern Greeks. She was born in Asia Minor in 1899 but moved to Greece after the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1923. She completed her studies in Interwar Germany and started her career immediately afterwards in Greece. She played a significant role in the promotion of Greek culture in Europe and the States from the 1920s... »

New discovery of ancient temple?

How many times have you found yourself walking without noticing anything around you. It looks like it happened to me countless times. Last week, when I stopped and looked, I realised I may have been on top of an ancient (classical or Hellenistic?) temple. I will not disclose the exact area because the architectural elements I found have not been catalogued. Suffice to say it is on the eastern coast of Attica. I also could use some help from expert archaeologists to explain what I am looking at. ... »

Inscriptions from Argos

Usually I do not pay any attention on seminar lectures but this one is exceptional. I suspect that the inscriptions will give us an insight on the Finances of temples during the fourth century and the early Hellenistic period. I can assure you that this is a unique group of inscriptiions that merits our full attention. The fact that John Davies is a respondent highlights their significance. If anyone listens to what Kritzas has to say,I would like to hear more about it. Dept. of Classics and Anc... »

Rebranding modern Greek identity

The following video went around the world the past few days. I have seen also several very clever responses that I cannot compete. Parts of the younger Greek generation seem to identify with its ideas, while other parts find it misleading and pretentious. As a historian I would like to state that, unlike Katerina, I do not believe that we have democracy in Greece. The traditional media is controlled by the elite and the government follows the dictates of the IMF and the European union. We have n... »
