In ancient Athens there was a catchphrase for people who were missing: “He is either dead or teaching school”. What did it mean?

  1. After the Athenians were crushed in the Sicilian Expedition, it was said that missing men were either dead, or captured as slaves and set to teaching the children of the Sicilians, since pedagogue was a slave position.
